Introduction

In Malaysia, almost all public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) or Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Awam (IPTA) such as UKM, UPM, and USM and and private HEIs or Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Swasta (IPTS) have a responsibility centre or pusat tanggungjawab (PTJ) known as the Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Unit or Office that operates at the university level which is the driving force of all activities related to occupational safety and health at the workplace.

A joint council of occupational safety and health at the national level has also been established in which the members include HEIs as well as research and development (R&D) institutes as a platform to discuss issues and problems faced that are related to occupational safety and health.

The Occupational Safety & Health Management Office (OSHMO) takes on the role of managing aspects related to occupational safety and health at UMP in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (OSHA 1994).

OSHMO also plays the role of planning programs and activitivies to be conducted for the implementation of the requirements of OSHA 1994 as practiced at UMP and also inculcating the ‘Safety Work Culture’ among all members of staff students at UMP.
