OSH WEEK UMP 2017

Gambang, 26 April 2017 - In another effort to cultivate the occupational safety and health (OSH) culture, Occupational Safety and Health Management Office (OSHMO) of Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) organized the UMP Occupational Safety & Health Week 2017  (UMP OSH WEEK 2017) from 25 April 2017 until 28 April 2017. The theme ‘Together in Building a Culture of Prevention in OSH through Positive Intervention’ was chosen to enhance awareness on the key role that each and everyone should play in cultivating the culture of prevention of accidents through positive intervention with tact and courtesy.

According to the Director of OSHMO UMP Mr Muhammad Hairynizam Muhd Taib, the main objective of UMP OSH Week 2017 was to promote and make OSH an important agenda at UMP in creating UMP community members who would be sensitive to aspects of occupational safety and health at the workplace, home, on the road and elsewhere. He also hoped that organizing an event such as the UMP OSH Week 2017 would stimulate and cultivate the OSH culture at UMP continuously so that it could provide the support for UMP to achieve excellence in in various fields in becoming a distinguished technological university as mentioned in the UMP Strategic Plan 2016 – 2020.

Various programs and activities had been planned for the UMP OSH Week 2017 which began on 25th and ended on the 28th of April 2017. Among them were OSH Night Movie which showcased the Deep Water Horizon tragedy, OSH motivational talk by the‘OSH Guru’ Mr Fakhrul Anwar Bin Ahmad Affandi, OSH exhibition by Malaysian statutory agencies, blood donation campaign, a forum on ‘Safety vs. Security’ featuring Mr Kamal Affendi, a well-known Malaysian crime analysst and Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Fadzil Bin Mohd Idris as guest panellists, OSH interactive games with edutainment elements as well as Friday Sermon covering OSH current issues. The UMP OSH Week 2017 was officiated by YH Professor Dato' Dr. Yuserrie Bin Zainuddin, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs & Alumi.

OSHMO also collaborated with various government agencies and companies in setting up exhibition booths during the official launch of the UMP OSH Week 2017. Among them were: DOSH Pahang, DOE Pahang, SOCSO, SWCorp, Fire and Rescue Department, State Health Department, NIOSH, UAE, BSN Prudential dan Permula Chemicals. It is hoped that the UMP OSH Week 2017 would was successful in cultivating a safe working culture among members of the UMP community.

OSH IN SCHOOL PROGRAM 2017

Pekan, 8 April 2017 – In its effort to cultivate the occupational safety and health (OSH) culture, Occupational Safety and Health Management Office (OSHMO) Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) collaborated with Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Tun Abdul Razak (InSTAR), Pekan to organize the OSH in School Program 2017. The program, which was the second of its kind, was held to establish cooperation between university, industry and school to enable the sharing of knowledge on awareness of aspects of occupational safety and health within the school environment.

According to the Director of OSHMO UMP Mr Muhammad Hairynizam Muhd Taib, OSHMO UMP had already held talks with the school management of InSTAR to especially enhance the level of OSH awareness among the school community. “Such awareness would be important to the school in implementing OSH risk management plan to provide an accident-free environment within the school In addition, it is also part of the University’s community service to the school while at the same time, promoting the University to the community outside of UMP,” he said.

The head of the program Mr Ahmad Harris Abd Hamid said that the program, which was held for the second time by UMP, was the University’s response to the call made by the government to cultivate the occupationsal safety and health culture as outlined in the 2016-2020 Occupational Safety and Health Master Plan or Pelan Induk Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan Malaysia 2016-2020. Various exciting activities such as Hazard Hunt and Safety Games were held. There was also a talk on OSH awareness by Associate Professor Dr Mohd Fadzil Mohd Idris from the Faculty of Engineering Technology. One InSTAR student, Mohamad Danish Aiman, aged 16, said that the exposure given during the program significantly helped him and his friends to understand the basic knowledge of occupational safety and health and should continue to be organised in the future.

Meanwhile, for a Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) practitioner Atikah Mustaffa, the initiative by OSHMO UMP was a proactive measure to promote the OSH culture at an early stage since it involved schoolchildren. OSHMO, with the cooperation from the Technical Unit of the Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering of UMP, HSE practitioners and UMP students, hoped that the sharing of knowledge and technology could be applicable to the school in ensuring a safe and health environment of the school.

 

FIRE FIGHTING COURSES SERIES 1 AND 2 2017

22-23 March 2017: OSHMO organized customized Fire Fighting Courses series 1 and 2 for members of staff from the UMP Security Division who had been appointed as first responders at UMP. A total of 60 members of staff from the UMP Security Division and responsibility centre or pusat tanggungjawab (PTJ) fire fighting squad. The training was conducted with the cooperation from the Civil Defence Force or Angkatan Pertahanan Awam (APM) at APM Berserah Office.

BIOSAFETY AWARENESS TRAINING

On 2 March 2017, OSHMO through the UMP Biosafety Institution Committee organized a course on Biosafety Awareness held at UMP Gambang Campus Training Room. This training was customized for lecturers, researchers and laboratory staff involved in research using GMO and LMO. The course was conducted by an officer from the Department of Biosafety, Malaysia.

INDUCTION COURSE FOR CONTRACTORS/ KURSUS INDUKSI KONTRAKTOR (KESKO) SERIES 1/2017

UMP Pekan, 22 February 2017: Occupational Safety and Health Management Office (OSHMO) UMP organized the fourth of series of Induction Course for Contractors or Kursus Induksi Pengurusan Kontraktor (KesKo) Program held at BPB UMP Pekan Campus Training Room. This was the first course in the year 2017. The program was made compulsory for all contractors/vendors registered with UMP before they could begin their work as contracted. On this day, a total of 30 contractors/vendors providing various services successfully attended the course. The contractors/vendors were exposed to basic knowledge on occupational safety and heatlth to ensure safe and health work culture can be implemented. This program would be organized from time to time in order to ensure the participation of all registered contractors/vendors.

A COURSE ON SCHEDULED WASTE MANAGEMENT

On 3 February 2017, the Committee on the Management of Chemical Sunstances & Scheduled Wastes organized a special course on Scheduled Waste Management for laboratory personnel handling scheduled chemical wastes. The training was attended by laboratory staff from all faculties and COE with laboratory facilities which generated scheduled wastes.

BENCHMARKING VISIT TO OSHBE AT IIUM KUANTAN

On 5 January 2017, OSHMO UMP staff and several members of the UMP Occupational Safety and Health Committee made a benchmarking visit to the Occupational Safety, Health and Built Environment (OSHBE) at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Kuantan Campus. The aim of the visit was to share views and experience in managing occupational safety and health of staff at the university. The UMP delegates were welcomed by the OSHBE IIUM staff. In addition, the OSHMO UMP delegates also visited a laboratory which had gained accreditation status from OHSMS.

 

PREMISE INSPECTION (TTI LABORATORY ZONE) BY THE STATE FIRE AND RESCUE DEPARTMENT TO ELIMINATE RISKS OF FIRE

On 9 December 2016, an inspection was made on the premise to eliminate risks of fire. The inspection was conducted by two officers from by the State of Pahang Fire and Rescue Department.

BENCHMARKING VISIT BY UITM DELEGATES TO UMP

On 30 November 2016, OSHMO hosted delegates from the Faculty of Sport Science and Recreation, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam who paid a benchmarking visit to Universiti Malaysia Pahang. The UiTM delegates was led by Dr Hasnul Faizal Hushin Amri, a senior lecturer. The aim of the visit was to share views and experience in managing occupational safety and health of staff at the university.

A COURSE ON EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN

On 24 November 2016, OSHMO organized Emergency Response Plan Course Series 1 held at BPB Pekan Campus Training Room. The course was conducted specially for ERT members at each responsibility centre or pusat tanggungjawab (PTJ) to enhance their skills in managing emergency team.
